Biography
In a very short space of time, Janette Slack has established herself as one of the hottest artists around. Originally from Hong Kong, now based in London, her sound is rooted in electro, house and breaks which she delivers with an infectious energy. This has lead to residencies at Air and Torture Garden as well as regular appearances at Global Gathering and The Cross alongside numerous tours in places such as Australia, Russia and China.
Janette sees production and DJing as inseparable. Since completing an audio engineering course with distinction in 2002, she has the technical know how to drive studios large or small, demonstrated on her debut release for Air Recordings. The funk fuelled ‘Shake & Play’ originally featured on Ali B’s Air Breaks compilation and caught the attention of DJs such as Deekline, Stanton Warriors and Jay Cunning. Meanwhile on the B-Side, Red Ramona was equally well received, making an appearance in the highly respected Cool Cuts Chart in Music Week with its delicately assembled groove, erupting into an anthemic peak time monster and blurring the lines further between electronic genres.
Not content with excelling solely in music, Janette has also appeared on screen. When director Doug ‘Scratch’ Pray set out to find “people who embody an independent attitude” for his short film series ‘Veer’, he hit the bullseye with Janette Slack. In the film you meet a strong-minded DJ/producer with intelligence, experience, an exhausting schedule, and dreams of world domination. In the flesh you get exactly the same thing.
Having started 2008 with a feature in The Observer Magazine, this year is set to be another hectic one for Janette Slack. Alongside her busy DJ schedule she is also working towards completing her debut artist album. Meanwhile her journalistic commitments include writing her regular blog for DJ Download and continuing her role as a reviews editor for Mixmag. Catch her while you can…
